The why, the what and the how of...

Weingut Peter-Jakob Kühn

Peter-Jakob Kühn, eleventh-generation proprietor of his family's 1786 estate, started in 1979 when he assumed responsibility. This is one of the few estates in Germany to use biodynamic methods (certified in 2005), and it was this departure away from conventional farming and use of chemicals in order to maximize the purity and expression of his holdings, that separated him from everyone else in the 1990s.

They are now one of Germany’s leading growers and in the cellar, the wines are made as naturally as possible, with a short pre-fermentation maceration on the skins for aromatic complexity.

The estate comprises 21 hectares on prime sites in and around Oestrich, with 90% given over to Riesling. The wines are now made by Peter-Bernhard and his wife Viktoria, who have refined the biodynamic methods pioneered by his parents.

We were first introduced to the wines of Peter-Jakob Kühn through one of their Pinot Noirs, not Rieslings! The Sommelier at Le Bon Georges in Paris served us the wine blind and we unanimously called it as a red Burgundy. We were so impressed that we knew we had to introduce the wines to South African wine lovers.
