Historically, La Paulée in Burgundy is a celebration at the heart of this fine wine region and with the consent and support of the La Paulée committee in Meursault, we first introduced the celebration to South Africa in 2014. 2025 is a watershed year in the life of Great Domaines because it marks our 25th birthday. As part of a multi-faceted plan to celebrate this milestone, we have made La Paulée the centre of these celebrations.
From this year onwards, we will be focusing on maximising the enjoyment of one of the finest wines of the world in one significant La Paulée event alternating between Cape Town and Johannesburg. In keeping with the significance of our 25th birthday, we have decided to make this version fittingly bigger and better, with this year’s edition at the new Marble Restaurant at the Cape Town Waterfront, where we will also host an acoustic performance by Arno Carstens.
After its genesis in medieval times, the rich tradition of La Paulée was revived in the village of Meursault in Burgundy about a century ago as a way to celebrate the end of the harvest with all the workers who contributed. In today’s world, the concept of La Paulée has morphed into celebrations of great Burgundy around the world with huge events in cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Geneva and Singapore, to mention but a few. The tradition, however, remains the same – with each attendee bringing along a bottle of their finest Premier or Grand Cru Burgundy to be shared with those around them.
While we have the privilege, and a big privilege it is, of sharing our La Paulée du Cap with you, we remain acutely conscious of the South Africa we live in today. To make a difference, and we know the effect is meaningful, Great Domaines has established an Education Trust to support education in all forms in SA. Dan Nicholl of Dan Really Likes Wine will be hosting an auction on the evening of several lots of rare wine, and wine-related opportunities, and we trust that with your help, this will be a huge success. This will serve on the evening as our rendition of the Hospices de Beaune, an equally important feature in Burgundy’s Les Trois Glorieuses.
We look forward to welcoming you to this event, raising a glass to the beauty of time and tradition, and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we can.
