Idda
IDDA is a joint venture born from a shared vision between two of Italy's most respected wine families – the Gaja family of Piedmont and the Graci family of Etna. Established in 2017 on the southwest slopes of Mount Etna, the project represents the first joint venture for both families and a commitment to exploring one of Sicily's most exciting yet historically underappreciated viticultural areas.
The name IDDA means "she" in Sicilian – the affectionate way locals refer to Mount Etna. It reflects the profound respect both families have for the volcano and its influence on the land. Angelo Gaja's fascination with Etna dates back to the late 1990s, while Alberto Graci had already established himself as one of the region's leading producers. Their shared belief in Etna's potential to produce wines of elegance, tension and longevity brought the collaboration to life.
The vineyards are situated on Etna's southwest-facing slopes, where altitude, volcanic soils and significant climatic variation create ideal conditions for producing wines of freshness and precision. In an era of climate change, the high-elevation vineyards and the naturally late ripening cycle of the grapes offer a unique balance between ripeness and vitality.
At the heart of the project is Carricante, Etna's indigenous white grape variety. Through thoughtful viticulture, massal selection and meticulous attention in the cellar, IDDA seeks to express the identity of this extraordinary landscape. The resulting wines are defined by their freshness, minerality, vibrant acidity and elegance, capturing both the power and refinement of the volcano from which they originate.
