Poggio di Sotto

Poggio di Sotto was established in 1989 by Tuscan legend Piero Palmucci to the South-East of Montalcino. This Brunello estate has rapidly become a benchmark and has built a reputation for producing some of the most elegant and refined wines of the region.

It took Piero Palmucci several years before he hand-picked a property that would best suit the Sangiovese Grosso grape, looking for specific soil types and microclimates. In 2012, the estate was sold to Claudio Tipa, owner of ColleMassari and Grattamacco, with the promise that the new owners would retain and respect the same quality standards and production techniques responsible for carving out this estate’s enviable reputation.

Located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Poggio di Sotto consists of 10 hectares of vineyards all planted with low yielding Sangiovese Grosso clones, all of varying ages. The estate is planted exclusively to Sangiovese. Around the same time that he purchased the estate, Piero began a collaboration with the university of Milan with the objective to identify the best Sangiovese clones. The vineyards are situated at three different levels between 250 and 400 meters above sea level, all on steep slopes and the viticulture is fully organic.

The unique microclimate, responsible for making it one of the best areas for growing Sangiovese, is created by the altitude, the protection by the ancient volcano Amiata on the one side, and the river Orcia on the other side. The rocky soil is composed of gravel and clay in the lower parcels and sandy clay closer to the top.

The wine is gently fermented and then aged for a minimum of four years in large Slavonian oak casks for the Brunello di Montalcino and five years, in great vintages, for the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. The Rosso di Montalcino is differentiated only by its vinification in stainless steel and shorter aging of two years.

The estate’s entire production amounts to 40,000 bottles, including their Rosso.
