Ronco del Gnemiz

Owned and managed by Serena Palazzolo and her sons, Ronco del Gnemiz has been one of Friuli Venezia-Giulia’s leading wineries for more than a decade.

Serena Palazzolo was asked by her father to assist him with the estate he had originally purchased as a holiday home in 1964 – without hesitation she jumped at the opportunity. Serena inherited the farm in 1990, and today it is not only her and her wine-guru husband, Christian Patat, but their children are also getting involved.

They farm 14 hectares of vineyards just outside the historic abbey of Rosazzo near the Slovenian border. An organic approach is followed in the vineyards, which grow on soils consisting of mainly clay and marl. The attentive mindset in the vineyards follows through to the winery where fermentation takes place in wooden casks and the utmost care is given to harness every ounce of the terroirs under their control. Their whites are full of texture, enticing fruit and are balanced with steely acidity. The reds are generally aged in a combination of new and second fill oak and once in bottle, express a boldness and real complexity.

These are transparent, pure wines that effortlessly express the region’s true identity, which places this estate among the true gems of the Friuli.

“It’s great to see this venerable artisan estate working at such a high level.” – Antonio Galloni, Vinous
