Oremus

In 1993, after the fall of Communism in Hungary, the Alvarez family of Spain’s mighty Vega Sicilia identified an opportunity to establish a winery in one of the world's greatest vineyard regions – Tokaji. The vines they purchased included a plot in the renowned Oremus vineyard, from which the sweet Aszú wines were first created in the 17th century. Today, the winery continues these age-old traditions with respect for its heritage and the environment. In addition to the classic sweet wines, Oremus also produces a selection of dry wines.

The estate in its current form was founded in 1993, when the land was purchased by the Alvarez family, owners of Bodegas Vega Sicilia. However, the cellars of the property date back to the 13th century.

The Tokaj area (formerly Tokaj-Hegyalja) is located on a mountain chain in north-eastern Hungary. The vineyards of Oremus are centred around 3 hills, Mandulas, Kupatka and Losce, where Furmint and Harslevu are planted. A modern winery was built in 1999 in Tolcsva. The aim at Oremus is to produce Tokaji wines of elegance and balance with perfect harmony between the sweet fruit and natural acidity.

The region is famous for it’s noble sweet wines, Tokaji-Aszu made from grapes which shrivel and rot in the autumn mists from the Bodrog river. These are some of the world’s great sweet wines and will age for decades.

In addition to their Aszu wines, Oremus also make a regular ‘late harvest’, a lighter, cleaner style of dessert wine, and a dry white wine. This comes from the Grand Cru ‘Mandolas’ vineyard, ideally suited for high quality dry wine production on the mid-slope and is made from Furmint.

In 2002, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee recognised the exceptional winemaking conditions of the Tokaj region, its secular capacity to foster culture and its value, and awarded it World Heritage status.
